Press Release

The Life, Style & Fashion Mag – A Magazine for the Family


The advancing dynamics of the family system has prompted the publication of a Muslim family magazine, The Life, Style & Fashion Mag, which aims to help families adapt to an ever changing lifestyle.

Editor Shireen Mansoor explains, “The mag is a family magazine covering: Food, Fashion & Style for both men and women, Spirituality & Inspiration, Kids Corner, Health & Beauty, Sports, Events Diary, Book reviews, poetry, travel diary, a section for new mothers,  and much more.”

Together with Rookaya Vawda, the magazine promises to be “more than just a good read”. It will serve to help, empower, enrich and educate the community, both young and old.

In partnership with ITV, the magazine will feature on its lifestyle programmes: Trending & Let’s Talk. The magazine started as an extension to the Durban Muslim blog (www.durbanmuslima.blogspot.com) and has already gained an overwhelming response and so much public support that the preparation of the 2nd and 3rd editions have already begun.

The Mag will be launched at The Life, Style & Fashion Mag Fashion Show, co-ordinated by North Beach Events.

Some of the Human Qualities that Allah, the Almighty loves

"Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah, then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic monotheism, follow the Quran and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Quran: 3:31)

Patience
"And Allah loves as-Sabirun (the patient)." (Quran: 3:146)

Justice and Dealing with Equity
"Be just: that is nearer to piety; and fear Allah." (Quran: 5:8)

Putting Trust in Allah
"Certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him)." (Quran: 3:159)

Rescuing
Abu Ya la Dailami and Ibn Asakir narrated: Abu Hurairah and Anas Ibn Malik said: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves rescuing the one who needs rescue."

Kindliness
"Aisha narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves kindliness in all matters." (Bukhari)
Repentance

Reflection of Allah's Grace
Al-Tirmidhi narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves from amongst his slaves, the one who has a sense of zeal or honor."

Magnanimity
Al-Hakim narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is All-Generous and He loves generosity in sale, purchase and judgment."

Virtuosity
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: " Allah loves the slave-believer who is poor but virtuous enough to refrain from begging though he has many children." (Muslim and Ahmed)
Justice
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves that you be just toward your children even when kissing them." (Ibn Al-Najjar)

Strength
Muslim narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The strong believer is better and more loved by Allah than the weak one, but they are both good."

Love for the Sake of Allah
Al-Tabarani, Ibn Ya'la, Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "If two men love each other for the sake of Allah, the stronger in love to his brother will be more loved by Allah."
Forgiveness
Ibn Iday narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is All-Forgiving and He loves forgiveness."

Continuous Performance of Righteous Deeds
Bukhari and Muslim narrated: Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: "The best loved deeds to Allah are the ones that are continuous even if they are not very many."

Loving and Visiting Believers
Malik narrated: Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: "Allah said: My love is due to those who meet for My sake, visit one another and make any effort for My pleasure."

Love of Virtuous Deeds
Ibn Abi Al-Dunya narrated: Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) said: "The best loved slaves to Allah are those who are made to love virtue and loving virtuous deeds is made lovely to them."

Good Manners and Conduct
Al-Tirmidhi narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The best loved by me and the nearest to me on the seats on the Day of Resurrection are those who have the best manners and conduct amongst you, who are intimate, are on good terms with others and are humble, and the most hated by me and who will be on the furthest seats from me are those who are talkative and arrogant."

Love of Allah Ta'ala is the basis of worship that should be directed to Him alone. Any other love should be for His sake too. The real love of Allah Ta'ala is to do whatever He ordained and to abandon whatever He forbade, in addition to following the Prophet's Sunnah.

Whoever obeys someone or something other than Allah Ta'ala and His Messenger, or follows any saying other than theirs, or fears other than Allah Ta'ala or seeks the pleasure of other than Allah Ta'ala , or puts his trust in other than Him, does not love Allah Ta'ala, nor does he love His Messenger. Muslims should also love one another and wish the best for one another. Allah's Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasalaam) said:

"One will not be a true believer unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." (Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Ahmed and Ibn Majah)

Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah said: My love is due to those who love one another for My sake."

Tolerance & Forgiveness


Nura's eyes blurred with tears as she heard the Imam proclaim, "The Prophet, (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, "Do not sever relations. Do not indulge in mutual enmity. Do not entertain rancour and jealousy against one another, and not be jealous of others. Be brethren among yourselves and become Allah's slaves. It is not permissible for a man to have severed his relations with any of his brethren for more than 3 days." (Bukhari)She realized then that almost six months had passed since the last time she spoke to Aisha, and now she could not even remember what their fight had been about.We all have had disagreements with our brothers and sisters, but why is it so wrong to harbour animosity? Why does Islam emphasize freeing the heart from hatred and enmity?Even more dangerous is that harbouring hatred will eat away at our faith. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, "Listen, may I not tell you something more important than Salaah, fasting and charity?" The companions requested him to do so. He said, "To keep the mutual relationship on the right footing, because the defect in the mutual relationship is the thing which shaves a thing clean. I do not mean that it shaves the hair, but that it shaves (removes) the religion." (Tirmithi)Hatred consumes the heart, so much that we forget Allah Ta'ala's justice and mercy. Our gratitude to Allah Ta'ala is repelled by resentment of others. That is why Satan's favourite method for destruction is instilling enmity in the believer's heart. He uses this weapon to weaken the Muslim community and make it vulnerable to both physical and spiritual enemy attacks.Our physical enemies do not stand a chance against the Muslim Ummah unless disunity has weakened it. Our spiritual enemies, Satan and our lower desires, do not stand chance against our faith unless animosity has weakened it. Most importantly, however, we should purify our hearts continuously to attain Allah Ta'ala's forgiveness, a blessing we attain Allah Ta'ala's forgiveness, a blessing we all desperately need. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) , assured us that, "Every Monday and Thursday men's acts are placed before Allah. On these days, Allah forgives the sins of everybody, except the polytheists. However, if there is a person who has spite and hatred against his bother, he says about them, 'Leave these two alone in their condition till they reconcile." (Muslim)Clearly, purity of heart is a quality we must acquire, and so Allah, the Merciful, has given us the means to attain it. We should begin by keeping our hearts free from jealousy. The Last Messenger (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) , warned us, "Keep away from jealousy, for jealousy eats up virtues in the same way as fire eats up wood." (Abu Dawud)We must realize that all blessings are from Allah Ta'ala, which He gives to whom He wills without measure. Failure to accept this and be grateful is rebellion against the will of Allah. This, in fact, was the crime of Satan when he refused to submit to Allah's ordinance to make Adam Allah's Khalifah on Earth!Maintaining our brotherhood also means to never sever relations. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam), admonished us against this serious sin, "There are three persons whose prayer does not rise even a fist above their heads. One is that man who leads the prayers of others who do not like him. Second is that woman who spends her night in such a way that her husband is displeased with her. And third are those two brothers who have severed their relations with each others." (Ibn Majah)While it may seen that severing relations is just a result of harbouring hatred, and not a cause, it actually prolongs and hardens angry feelings by allowing them to go unresolved. Even worse is that severing relations distorts our perception of the incident and causes us to become more bitter.Instead, we should rush to resolve disagreements.

The Obligation of Gratitude


وعن أبي هُرَيْرة ، رضي اللَّه عنْهُ ، أَنَّ النبي صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم أُتِي لَيْلةَ أُسْرِيَ بِهِ بِقَدَحَيْن مِن خَمْر ولَبن ، فنظَرَ إلَيْهِما فأَخذَ اللَّبنَ ، فَقَالَ جبريلُ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم : « الحمْدُ للَّهِ الَّذي هَداكَ للفِطْرةِ لوْ أخَذْتَ الخَمْرَ غَوتْ أُمَّتُكَ » رواه مسلم .

1393/242 - رياض الصالحين

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: On the Night of Al-Isra (the Night of Ascension) the Prophet (PBUH) was presented with two drinking vessels: one full of wine and the other one full of milk. He looked at them. Then he took the vessel which was full of milk. Thereupon Jibril (Gabriel) said: "Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah) Who has guided you to that, which is in accord with Fitrah (i.e., Islamic Monotheism; pure nature of Islam). Had you selected wine, your people would have gone astray."[Muslim].

Commentary:
This Hadith highlights the following points:
1. Islam is a religion which matches with the pure nature. Every sensible person accepts it instinctively.
2. One who is endowed with the capacity and aptitude to do good should praise Allah.
3. Wine is the root of all evils and for this reason has been regarded the "Mother of Vices".
4. To take good omen from agreeable signs is Mustahabb (desirable).

I am a young and vibrant student completing my articles towards the chartered accountancy profession and currently residing in Durban

In addition to studying I am also involved with our local Islamic radio station ‘Radio Al Ansaar’ often assisting with the sports news and being the sound technician for the morning show.

As a 90s toddler my passion for sports developed at a young age without the technology of Playstations, Wii, X box or smartphones that exist today. I was sent out on the instruction of my mum  into the playground ,that was our yard, to entertain myself with nothing but a bat and  ball in my hand to practise with.

Twenty three years on I still feel I am practising and learning from past mistakes. As I continuously set out to achieve my goals many of the sporting personalities provide inspiration to me though I gain my greatest strength in the remembrance of our Almighty Allah (SWT)

A good read


Al-Miqdam ibn Ma‘dikarib radhiyallahu anhu heard Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam say, “What you feed yourself is sadaqah (charity) for you. What you feed your child is sadaqah (charity) for you. What you feed your wife is sadaqah (charity) is for you. What you feed your servant is sadaqah (charity) for you.” (Quoted from Adabul Mufrad by Bukhari)

Ponder:
A Shaykh was asked “can u smoke in Jannah?” The Shaykh smiled and responded saying: “yes you can BUT you have to go to hell to light up…”

A دُعاء:
Allahumma  humma inni astaghfiruka lizambi wa astahdika limaraashedi amri wa astajeruka min sharri nafsi wa atoobu elayka fatub alayya innaka anta rabbi!

O اللَّه سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى  I beg Thee for forgiveness for all my sins and a seek guidance and that Thou will reveal unto me the ways of achieving success in my efforts,and I seek refuge in Thee from the mischief of my own self; and I repent before Thee so accept my repentance as Thou art indeed my Rab.

O اللَّه سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى Forgive us all our sins, Guide us, Protect us From All Evil And Harm,  Help us, Unite us, Keep us firm on the swiraatal mustaqeem, and make us  amongst Thy virtuous and obedient servants

Food for Thought
Suppose, you are given a key to open a lock. What would happen if the key is damaged or half of it is missing? Would the lock open? No. What if you are trying to insert the key upside down? The lock will still remain closed.
Similarly, salaah is the key to Paradise. In order to open the doors of Paradise, we must make our salaah proper. If our salaah is totally opposite to the ways of Nabie صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , then it is as if we are trying to put the key upside down. And if we don't have concentration and devotion in salaah, then it is as if we are planning to use a damaged key to open a very secured lock. Finally, if we do not complete our prayers with all the necessary actions, then it is the same as using a key which is missing parts or half broken.


Qataadah bin Da'aamah As-Sadusi relates: "I asked Anas رضي الله عنه ., 'How was the hair of Rasulullah ( صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ )?'.  He replied: 'It was not very twisted, nor very straight.  It had a slight twist and was a bit  curled, and reached till his ear-lobes'". 


The Stinginess of Jealousy
Jealousy is a difficult emotion to understand. Yet each of us—or at least, too many of us—suffer jealousy in some dimension from time to time: it may be a sudden impulse, or it may be a deep-seated feeling that grows within you against an individual. Whatever the case may be, our beloved Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) warned us out of sincere concern for our well-being to guard against it, saying, “Beware of jealousy, for indeed jealousy consumes one’s good deeds like fire consumes wood.” [Sunan Abi Dawud] Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate the origins of jealousy in order to help us rid ourselves of this evil.

Conceited will be like Ants
The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The arrogant will be gathered like small ants in the form of men on the Day of Resurrection, overwhelmed by humiliation from all sides.” [Mishkaat al-Masaabeeh]
Small ants are something to which people pay no attention; they step on them without even realizing it.
Arrogance is a major sin according to the laws of Shariah. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) hates conceited people very much. When he resurrects His slaves, He will gather the arrogant in a humiliating form.
Sometimes we put on an appearance of humility while our hearts are filled with conceit and haughtiness. Rid yourself of these false beliefs about yourself before you are humiliated by all of mankind on the Day of Judgement.


May اللَّه سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى grant us true love of " MY BELOVED

النَّبِي محمد صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

and the love to follow every sunnah

Salaat e Tasbeeh


This namaaz is offered in four rakat at a time and can be read in any part of the day and night, keeping in mind the forbidden times for reading Nafil namaaz. The reader of this namaaz is credited with innumerable blessings and benefits, reewards and forgiveness. The Prophet (SAWS), while teaching this namaaz to his uncle Hzrat Abbas (RA) has said, "If it possible then read it every day; if not, then every week; once in every month; once in every year; if it is still not possible, DO READ IT ONCE in a life time.
The Tasbih to be read:
Subhaanallahi walhamdulillahi walaa-ilaha illallaahu wallahu-akbar

  1. In the first rakaat, after reading "Subhaanaka allahumma..", "aoozubillah...", "bismillah...", read the above tasbih 15 times.
  2. Then read sura Fateha and a sura.
  3. Read above tasbih 10 times.
  4. Go to ruku and say the "Subhaana rabbiyal azeem"
  5. Read the tasbih 10 times in ruku
  6. Read "Samial lahu liman hamidah-Rabbana lakal hamdh" and get up from ruku to qiyam position
  7. Read the tasbih 10 times
  8. Go to sijda and read "Subhaana rabbiyal'ala"
  9. Read tasbih 10 times and sit up
  10. Read tasbih 10 times
  11. Go to sajda again and read "Subhaana rabbiyal'ala"
  12. Read tasbih 10 times.
  13. Get up to begin 2nd rakat
  14. Do rakat #2 in same fashion
  15. Read Attahiyatu and get up for 3rd and 4th rakaat
  16. Read Attahiyatu, Allahumma and finish namaaz.


The second method is similar to the method #1 with the following exceptions:
  1. Read the tasbih 15 times BEFORE Sura Fateha and AGAIN 15 times AFTER you read a second sura.
  2. Then read 10 times in ruku, in standing in qiyam, in sajda, between sajda, in second sajda
  3. Before standing up for the second rakat, stay seated. Say "Allahu" out loud.
  4. Stand up for second rakat by saying "Allahu-akbar"
  5. Do the second rakat as defined in steps 1 - 2
  6. Before reciting Attahiyatu, read tasbih 10 times
  7. Read Attahiyatu and get up for third rakat
  8. Do third and fourth rakat as defined above.
  9. Before reading last Attahiyatu, read tasbih 10 times.
  10. Read Attahiyatu, Allahumma and finish namaz.
