More information:
Imran Garda, 31, joined Al Jazeera in 2006 and anchored the news and Inside Story from Doha, Kuala Lumpur and Washington D.C.  Most recently, he hosted the award-winning, Emmy-nominated show The Stream.
The main character of his novel is New York-based journalist Yusuf Carrim who returns to South Africa when he finds out that Sam, a family friend has gone missing.
The Thunder that Roars has been published by Random Struik which describes the novel as ‘fast-paced’ and ‘cosmopolitan’:  “From the suburbs of Johannesburg to the streets of Bulawayo, from Dubai air­port to an immigrant facility on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, Yusuf ’s quest to find Sam turns into an inward journey of his own.”
Garda says that although the first draft for the book took him six months to complete, the story had been ‘bubbling inside him for much longer.’
He said it wasn’t difficult to make the transition from journalism to fiction.  “Both involve storytelling and conveying information,” he explained.  “I just get to explore stories and the human condition with more creativity in this regard.”
He added that being a published author was more special than any other professional achievement.  “Now I’d love to do another book.”

Whether we like it or not, many of us women take preparing for the iftaar component of Ramadaan very seriously, stocking our freezers up months in advance.

Feeding one's family can be act of worship, but we also need to remember that Ramadaan presents a valuable opportunity to build our relationships with our Creator.  But this also requires some degree of preparation, and knowledge.

With the aim of assisting you in this regard, and keeping in mind our busy schedules ahead of Ramadaan, ILM for Women invites you to a short but effective programme on how to get the most out of Ramadaan, presented by Hafez Fuzayl Soofie.

Date:  Tuesday, June 24th 2014 (Yes, we've left it till the last week so you can start Ramadaan with the outcomes of the programme fresh in your minds, hearts and souls)
Time:  9am to 12pm
Venue:  Randerees Braai Ranch, 49 Collingham Road, Sherwood

The secret chef -Saucy prawns
1 kg prawns
peri peri oil
1 teaspoon lemon pepper
1/2 teaspoon dhana Jeeru (Cumin)
1/2 teaspoon tanddpri spice
1 teaspoon fine garlic
1 teaspoon crused garlic
1/2 teaspoon ginger
red or green masala
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon mayo
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
1 tablespoon peri peri sauce
lemon juice
marinade atleast for 1 hour

sause :
1/2 cup fresh cream
1 tablespoon mayo
2 tablespoon tomato paste
2 tablespoon steers peri peri sauce
1 teaspoon steers sweet peri peri sauce
1 tablespoon steers hot peri peri sauce


METHOD


cook prawns in butter few blocks
butter .
5 minutues before nearly cooked add sauce and

Laylatul Bara'ah

Forgiveness on Laylatul Bara’ah

The night of Bara'ah (emancipation), the 15th night of Sha'baan is indeed a significant and blessed night. On this night, Allah Ta'ala showers His servants with special and divine mercy. It is recorded in the Ahadith that all Muslims are forgiven on this night besides the following: .

1. Idolaters.

2. Those who harbour enmity against others.
3. Those who consume alcohol. 4. Those who disobey their parents. 5. Those who commit murder. 6. Those who sever family ties. 7. Those who wear their trousers, kurtas, lungis, etc. below their ankles We should, at this time, take stock of ourselves. Are we of those that will be deprived of Allah’s mercy on this night due to our evil actions? If we find ourselves guilty of the above evil actions then we need to rectify ourselves.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS FOR THE NIGHT OF BARA'AH:
Salaah– Salaah is the most preferred form of Ibadah for this night. It should be noted that there is no particular number of Rakaats to be read on this night.
Tilaawat– The recitation of the Holy Quran is very beneficial on this night.
Zikr– Engage in the remembrance of Allah Ta'ala with the tongue and heart.
Dua– The greatest benefit one can draw from the blessings of this night is through Dua and supplication.

The recommended Dua for this night is:

أَعُوْذُ بِعَفْوِكَ مِنْ عِقَابِكَ وَأَعُوْذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لَاأُحْصِيْ ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

(O' Allah) I take refuge in your forgiveness from your punishment, and I take refuge in your pleasure from your anger and I take refuge in you from you. I cannot praise you as you ought to be praised. You are as you have praised yourself. (Shuabul Imaan)!

Getting the most out of Ramadaan

Red Velvet Cake

Bint Purple had this recipe to share with the secret chef -

Red Velvet Cake

60g butter

150g castor sugar

1 egg

10g cocoa

20ml red food colouring

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

120ml buttermilk

150g flour

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp bicarb

1 tsp white vinegar

ICING

1/4 pound butter

2 cups icing sugar

1 tub cream cheese

1 tsp vanilla essence

Method: beat butter & sugar till fluffy. 

Add egg and beat until smooth texture, add cocoa,food colouring, vanilla essence, buttermilk and flour and mix with a beater. 

Then mix vinegar with bicarb (it must sizzle) and add to mixture, add salt and mix together with beater. 

Pour into cupcake holders or alternately bake as a full cake.

For icing: soften butter slightly, add cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence until a smooth texture is formed. 

Careful not to make it too soft. 

Pipe onto cupcakes or smooth over cake!!
